NEW BERN, N.C. – Trevonta Lynch, 34, of Halifax, is headed to federal prison for 15 years. The convicted felon made a fatal mistake during a routine traffic stop: reaching for a loaded firearm in front of law enforcement. The sentencing, handed down by U.S. District Judge Louise W. Flanagan, sends a clear message: arm yourself against police in Eastern North Carolina, and you’ll face a severe reckoning.
The October 2, 2023 incident began with a simple headlight violation. Halifax County Sheriff’s Deputies pulled Lynch over and quickly discovered a baggie of marijuana. Lynch initially claimed it was the only thing he had, a blatant lie that quickly unraveled. Despite repeated warnings, Lynch continued to fumble around the rear floorboard of his vehicle, drawing the suspicion of the deputies. He eventually confessed to reaching for a firearm – a 9mm pistol loaded with a large capacity magazine.
“Trevonta Lynch is a violent repeat offender who pulled a loaded gun on law enforcement officers,” stated U.S. Attorney Ellis Boyle in a press release following the sentencing. “That dangerous act could have cost lives – now it’s costing him 15 years of freedom. Let this be a warning: if you threaten our officers or our communities, we will find you, we will prosecute you, and you will spend years in federal prison where you can’t hurt anyone again.” The search of Lynch’s vehicle also revealed 83 grams of marijuana and drug paraphernalia consistent with trafficking.
Halifax County Sheriff Tyree Davis emphasized the broader implications of the case. “This case is not about marijuana. It’s about a violent career criminal with a history of violent felonies and disregard for the law,” Davis said. Lynch’s rap sheet includes a staggering 12 convictions for breaking and entering, all classified as violent felonies. This history, combined with the firearm possession, triggered enhanced federal penalties, including the mandatory minimum 15-year sentence.
The collaborative effort between the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) was crucial in bringing Lynch to justice. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Phil Aubart skillfully prosecuted the case, presenting the evidence that led to the conviction and subsequent sentencing. Davis added, “Thanks to our partnership with federal law enforcement, we removed this dangerous individual from the streets of Halifax County and into federal prison where he belongs. We are not playing. We will use every legal resource to protect our citizens.”
Lynch was on supervised probation at the time of the traffic stop. This case serves as a stark reminder that possessing a firearm while being a convicted felon, particularly with a history of violence, carries severe consequences under federal law. Lynch’s reckless actions have ensured he’ll be a long-term resident of a federal prison, far removed from the streets of Halifax County.
