PROVIDENCE, R.I. – In a shocking display of disregard for the law, Carlos Gregorio Santos, a convicted sex offender, has been sentenced to 12 months and one day in federal prison for his brazen attempt to reenter the United States illegally. The sentence, handed down by U.S. District Court Judge Mary S. McElroy, is a stark reminder that those who commit heinous crimes will be brought to justice and punished to the fullest extent of the law.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Santos, 52, was deported to his native Guatemala in April 2019 after being convicted and incarcerated on a Rhode Island state charge of indecent solicitation of a minor. However, the convicted sex offender clearly had no intention of staying out of the country, as he was arrested by Providence Police on September 29, 2023, following an investigation into an alleged altercation between himself and another man over a dispute about wages.
When questioned by police, Santos attempted to shield his true identity by providing a false name and date of birth. However, the FBI was able to confirm his real identity, and the case was subsequently turned over to the U.S. Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) for further investigation.
The case against Santos was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Julie M. White, who worked tirelessly to ensure that the convicted sex offender faced justice for his crimes. The matter was investigated by ICE, with the assistance of the FBI and the Providence Police Department.
In a statement, U.S. Attorney Zachary A. Cunha highlighted the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions, stating, “The sentence imposed today sends a strong message that those who commit crimes and then attempt to re-enter the country will be held accountable for their actions.”
Upon completion of his current term of incarceration, Santos faces deportation. His 12-month prison sentence serves as a stark reminder that those who commit heinous crimes will be punished to the fullest extent of the law, and that the justice system will not tolerate such behavior.
