Gun Possession Charge Lands DC Man in Hot Water
Kavon D. Young, 28, of Washington, D.C., is facing a long stretch behind bars after pleading guilty to a federal firearms charge.
According to the guilty plea, Young was pulled over by Metropolitan Police Department officers on February 16, 2018, after he was caught driving the wrong way on a one-way street in the Sixth District. When officers approached, Young sped off and eventually jumped out of the vehicle, leaving the door wide open.
As officers searched the vehicle, they found a loaded semi-automatic firearm tucked between the driver’s seat and the center console. The magazine held 16 rounds of ammunition, and an additional seven rounds were found in the car.
Young’s prior convictions in the District of Columbia and Prince George’s County, Md., made him ineligible to possess a firearm. He was sentenced to various firearms offenses in the District in 2016 and for a firearms offense and vehicle theft charge in Prince George’s County in 2015.
Young faces an estimated range of 30 to 37 months in prison and up to three years of supervised release. He is currently being held pending sentencing, which is set for December 14, 2018.
In a statement, U.S. Attorney Jessie K. Liu and Chief of the Metropolitan Police Department Peter Newsham commended the work of those who investigated the case, including Assistant U.S. Attorney Emory V. Cole, who prosecuted the case.
The guilty plea is a stark reminder of the consequences of gun possession in the nation’s capital. As Grimy Times continues to delve deeper into the world of crime and punishment, one thing is clear: the laws are in place to keep the community safe, and those who break them will face the music.
