Johnny Lorrain Dishman, a 68-year-old Wise County, Virginia resident with a history of felony convictions, was found guilty of unlawfully possessing a firearm and ammunition. On February 13, 2025, officers from the Wise Police Department arrived at Dishman’s residence in search of a wanted individual. After announcing themselves for over 20 minutes, Dishman finally responded by racking a loaded Mossberg 500AT, 12-gauge shotgun and greeting the officers. This incident occurred despite Dishman’s prior convictions, including nine felony offenses in both federal and state court, most recently in 2022 for unlawfully possessing a firearm and Schedule I/II controlled substance.
Dishman’s actions on February 13, 2025, demonstrated a blatant disregard for the law and posed a significant threat to the officers involved. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Wise Police Department, and Wise County Sheriff’s Office collaborated to investigate the case, which was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Corey Hall and Danielle Stone.
As a result of the guilty verdict, Dishman faces a maximum sentence of 15 years of imprisonment and is scheduled to be sentenced in October of this year. The outcome of this case serves as a reminder of the consequences of illegal firearm possession, particularly for individuals with a history of felony convictions.
