A brazen gunpoint robbery shook a Williston convenience store on April 3, 2026, when Maurice Nelson, 38, of Philadelphia, pointed a handgun at the clerk and threatened to kill them. Nelson made off with approximately $369, packs of cigarettes, lighters, and coins. The crime occurred at a convenience store in Williston, Vermont, and Nelson was apprehended about 90 minutes later in Burlington. The motive behind the robbery is still unclear.
According to court records, Nelson’s clothing and the items found in the stolen vehicle matched the description of the robber. A handgun was also located near the area where Nelson was arrested. Nelson pleaded not guilty to the charges during an arraignment on July 30, 2026.
Nelson faces a mandatory minimum of seven years of imprisonment and up to lifetime imprisonment if convicted. The actual sentence will be determined by the District Court with guidance from the advisory United States Sentencing Guidelines and the statutory sentencing factors.
The investigation was a collaborative effort between law enforcement agencies, including the Burlington Police Department and the United States Attorney’s Office. First Assistant United States Attorney Jonathan A. Ophardt commended the swift and collaborative investigatory efforts.
