Hartford Man Sold Heroin Linked to 2 Fatal Overdoses

In a shocking case of narcotics dealing that led to the deaths of two Enfield residents, CHRISTOPHER BARRETO, 29, of Hartford, has pleaded guilty to distributing heroin involved in the overdoses.

BARRETO faces a maximum term of imprisonment of 20 years after pleading guilty to one count of possession with intent to distribution, and distribution of, controlled substances, according to U.S. Attorney John H. Durham.

The case is part of an ongoing statewide initiative targeting narcotics dealers who distribute heroin, fentanyl or opioids that cause death or serious injury to users. BARRETO was arrested on August 10, 2017, after investigators seized approximately 2,000 wax folds of heroin from his residence.

The investigation revealed that BARRETO consistently dealt narcotics from April 2016 until his arrest. He sold heroin to two individuals who subsequently overdosed and died: a 31-year-old man on August 26, 2016, and a 36-year-old man on October 27, 2016. The victims had purchased heroin from BARRETO through text messages.

U.S. District Judge Michael P. Shea scheduled sentencing for October 31, 2018. BARRETO is currently released on bond pending sentencing.

The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Enfield Police Department, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Jocelyn Courtney Kaoutzanis handling the prosecution. As the investigation continues, the community remains vigilant in the fight against narcotics dealing and the devastating consequences it brings.

The tragic loss of life in this case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of heroin and the importance of addressing the opioid epidemic. BARRETO’s guilty plea is a significant step towards justice, but it is only the beginning of the process.
