Waipahu Man Sentenced to 15 Years for Methamphetamine Trafficking

A federal jury found Mario Cesar Torres, 57, of Waipahu, guilty of conspiring to distribute and possess with intent to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine in February 2013. On Monday, United States District Judge J. Michael Seabright sentenced Torres to 188 months imprisonment for the crime.

Torres was found to be responsible for distributing 1,285 grams of actual methamphetamine from August 2010 through January 2011. According to evidence produced during the trial, during that time period, Torres delivered approximately one pound quantities of methamphetamine on two occasions, and was the driver on a third transaction in which a passenger in his vehicle delivered approximately one pound of methamphetamine.

Torres faced a mandatory minimum sentence of ten years imprisonment on each count, which would have resulted in a total of 40 years if convicted on all counts. However, the jury found him guilty of only four counts of the crime, resulting in a significantly reduced sentence.

The case was the result of a joint investigation by Homeland Security Investigations, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Honolulu Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark A. Inciong handled the prosecution.

Torres’ sentence is a significant blow to the methamphetamine trafficking ring he was involved in. The investigation and prosecution of Torres demonstrate the commitment of law enforcement agencies to disrupting and dismantling organized crime in Hawaii.

The verdict and sentence in this case serve as a reminder that methamphetamine trafficking is a serious crime that carries severe penalties. We will continue to work tirelessly to bring those responsible for this crime to justice and to keep our communities safe.

United States Attorney Florence T. Nakakuni praised the investigators and prosecutors who worked on the case, saying, ‘This sentence is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the investigators and prosecutors who worked on this case.’
