GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: William Hernandez, 27, from Hawthorne, Florida, faces a grim future after being indicted on federal charges of possessing with the intent to distribute five grams or more of methamphetamine, carrying a firearm during a drug trafficking offense, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The charges were announced by John P. Heekin, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Florida.
Hernandez is set to appear before United States Magistrate Judge Midori A. Lowry in Gainesville on July 29, 2025, at 2:15 p.m. With these serious offenses, Hernandez could be staring down a life sentence if convicted.
The investigation into Hernandez’s activities was led by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Gainesville Police Department, with support from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Assistant United States Attorneys James A. McCain and Adam Hapner are handling the prosecution.
It’s important to note that an indictment is merely an accusation, and Hernandez is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide effort aimed at dismantling criminal organizations and protecting communities.
The United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Florida is one of 94 offices responsible for federal litigation across the nation. For more information on this case or the office, visit their website: http://www.justice.gov/usao/fln/index.html.
