Washington – The United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia has made headlines with a record-setting national health care fraud takedown, charging multiple defendants in connection with schemes to defraud Medicare, Medicaid, TRICARE, and other federally funded health care programs.
U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro declared, “Health care fraud costs this country billions of taxpayer dollars every year.” She vowed that those caught in these fraudulent schemes would face justice. The takedown was an unprecedented collaboration between federal and state law enforcement agencies across the nation.
Attorney General Pamela Bondi echoed the sentiment, stating, “This administration will not tolerate criminals who line their pockets with taxpayer dollars while endangering the health and safety of our communities.” The government’s coordinated efforts resulted in seizures over $245 million in cash, luxury vehicles, cryptocurrency, and other assets.
Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that they prevented over $4 billion from being paid on false claims and suspended or revoked billing privileges of 205 providers. Civil charges against 20 defendants totaling $14.2 million were also filed, along with civil settlements with 106 defendants valued at $34.3 million.
The Health Care Fraud Unit of the Department of Justice Criminal Division’s Fraud Section led the operation, working alongside U.S. Attorneys’ Offices, HHS-OIG, FBI, and DEA. Assistant Director in Charge Steven J. Jensen of the FBI Washington Field Office emphasized the significant impact of healthcare fraud on insurance premiums and patient safety.
HHS-OIG Acting Inspector General Juliet T. Hodgkins highlighted the unit’s dedication to detecting, investigating, and dismantling fraud schemes, ensuring protection of taxpayer dollars and vulnerable patients.
