CHARLOTTE, N.C. — In a gritty sentencing today, Terry Sherwood Slade, 55, faced over 15 years in federal prison for his latest violent escapades. The U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina announced that Slade was sentenced to 188 months behind bars followed by three years of supervised release after being convicted of Hobbs Act robbery and possession of a firearm by a felon.
Slade’s criminal streak began on November 20, 2023, when he entered the House of Clouds Smoke Shop in Charlotte. Threatening violence, Slade made off with cash and cigarettes, a prelude to his brazen theft at Nick’s Arcade only days later.
In a harrowing confrontation, Slade took a security guard’s firearm, threatened employees, and stole cash from a safe at the arcade before fleeing. His spree culminated on December 13 when he was reported shot at by an individual with whom he’d previously clashed. Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) apprehended him, finding the stolen firearm on his person.
Slade pleaded guilty to Hobbs Act robbery and possession of a firearm by a felon in September 2024. His sentence is the culmination of a career that includes prior federal convictions for Hobbs Act robbery and multiple state felony convictions in North Carolina for Assault With a Dangerous Weapon, Intent to Kill Inflicting Serious Injury, and Common Law Robbery.
U.S. Attorney Ferguson commended the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and CMPD for their relentless pursuit of justice. The U.S. Probation Office’s assistance was also acknowledged in bringing Slade to justice.
The case was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Charlotte, a testament to the community’s dedication to protecting its citizens from violent crime.
