Steven Waldrip, Heroin Distribution Resulting in Death, Illinois 2013

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – A Rock Island man is facing federal charges related to a heroin overdose death in Iowa. Steven Waldrip, 47, appeared in federal court on unspecified charges following a federal indictment that accuses him of distributing heroin resulting in death on Dec. 15, 2013.

The indictment also alleges that Waldrip distributed heroin on three separate occasions in April 28, 2014, May 1, 2014, and May 29, 2014. According to officials, the heroin was distributed in the Quad Cities area.

Waldrip was scheduled for a detention hearing on tomorrow before U.S. District Judge Sara L. Darrow at 9 a.m. in Rock Island. The charges are the result of an investigation into the heroin overdose death of a Bettendorf woman who was found dead at her residence on Dec. 16, 2013.

Waldrip is not the only one facing charges related to the woman’s death. Kyle Joseph Wilson, 24, was indicted in April 2014 and charged with one count of distribution of heroin resulting in death. Wilson was arrested on May 12, 2014 and is being held without bond.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Don Allegro. According to the indictment, if convicted, Waldrip could face a minimum of 20 years to life in prison. If he has a prior felony drug conviction, the penalty would be life in prison. For each count of distribution of heroin, Waldrip could face up to 30 years in prison.

Members of the public are reminded that an indictment is merely an accusation. The defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Investigative agencies involved in the case include the Bettendorf Police Department, Quad Cities Metropolitan Enforcement Group, and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
