Lowell Man Sentenced for Gun Trafficking

Lowell, MA – In a disturbing case of gun trafficking, a 24-year-old Lowell man, Rathsomnang Neth, has been sentenced for selling firearms without a license and possessing an unregistered sawed-off shotgun.

Neth pleaded guilty in January 2019 to one count of dealing in firearms without a license and two counts of possessing and transferring an unregistered shotgun with a shortened barrel. The illegal activities took place from December 2016 to April 2017.

During this time, Neth sold four handguns and a .20 gauge pump-action shotgun with a barrel that had been sawed-off below 18 inches. This is a serious offense, and the punishment should serve as a warning to others who engage in similar activities.

Neth was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Indira Talwani to time served (approximately two days) and three years of supervised release. The government recommended a sentence of 30 months in prison, which was not imposed.

Acting United States Attorney Nathaniel R. Mendell and James Ferguson, Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Boston Field Office, made the announcement. Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert E. Richardson of Mendell’s Major Crimes Unit prosecuted the case.

This case highlights the importance of gun laws and the need for strict enforcement. Gun trafficking is a serious crime that can have devastating consequences, and it is essential that those who engage in such activities face the full force of the law.

Neth’s sentence is a reminder that gun trafficking will not be tolerated in our community. We must continue to work together to prevent such crimes and keep our neighborhoods safe.
