CAMDEN, N.J. – A brazen heroin deal gone wrong has landed a 33-year-old Middlesex County man in the crosshairs of federal authorities. Eduard Avila Rivas, of New Brunswick, New Jersey, pleaded guilty to possession of heroin with intent to distribute after a sting operation turned up nearly three kilograms of the deadly drug.
According to court documents, Rivas traveled to Clarksboro, New Jersey, on February 10, 2020, to meet with an associate for a heroin sale. Following his arrival, law enforcement officers searched his vehicle and seized the stash, which was packaged for sale.
The heroin trafficking count to which Rivas pleaded guilty carries a minimum of 10 years in prison, a maximum of life in prison, and a maximum fine of $10 million. Sentencing is scheduled for December 22, 2021.
Acting U.S. Attorney Rachael A. Honig credits the Department of Homeland Security, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), Atlantic City Office, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Jason J.
