Awal Mohammed, Heroin Trafficking, Maryland 2011

Heroin Dealer Sentenced

Baltimore, Maryland – A Baltimore County resident has been sentenced to 11 years behind bars for his role in a heroin trafficking ring. Awal Mohammed, 38, of Greenbelt, was found guilty of conspiring to distribute and possession with intent to distribute heroin.

On December 27, 2011, Maryland State Police stopped a car in which Mohammed was a passenger and seized 971 grams of heroin from the glove compartment. According to court documents, the stash was worth over $200,000 on the street. Mohammed had used a Ghanaian courier to bring the heroin into the United States and was transporting it to sell to a buyer in Baltimore.

Prosecutors alleged that Mohammed had previously sold heroin to other dealers and customers, and that it was foreseeable to him that the conspiracy would distribute at least 1,000 grams of heroin. The sentencing was announced by United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Rod J. Rosenstein, who commended the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), DEA, and Baltimore County Police Department for their work in the investigation.

Mohammed’s case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kenneth S. Clark, who was thanked by Rosenstein for his efforts. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge James K. Bredar, who ordered Mohammed to serve 136 months in prison followed by five years of supervised release.

The heroin trafficking ring’s scope and reach were detailed in court documents, which revealed that Mohammed had used a network of dealers and couriers to bring the deadly substance into the United States. The investigation and subsequent sentencing are seen as a major blow to the heroin trade in Baltimore.

Mohammed’s sentencing is a stark reminder of the dangers of heroin trafficking and the consequences for those who engage in it. As the opioid epidemic continues to claim lives across the country, law enforcement agencies are working tirelessly to disrupt and dismantle heroin trafficking rings.
