Steven McCurdy, a 46-year-old Memphis man, has been sentenced to over 24 years in prison for distributing heroin and carfentanil that resulted in a fatal overdose in Byhalia, Mississippi. On May 11, 2020, McCurdy sold what he claimed was heroin to a victim and a witness, who later took the drugs at the witness’s home. The victim was found unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene.
The cause of death was determined to be a combination of heroin and carfentanil toxicity. McCurdy, also known as ‘Kroger Man’ and ‘Plug Tunchii’, admitted to selling marijuana and narcotics but claimed no one had overdosed on his products when questioned by FBI agents.
After a three-day jury trial, McCurdy was found guilty on April 2, 2026. He was sentenced to 292 months in prison, followed by a three-year term of supervised release, by Chief U.S. District Judge Sheryl H. Lipman on July 17, 2026.
US Attorney D. Michael Dunavant emphasized that the distribution of illegal narcotics is not a victimless crime and poses a significant threat to public safety. The sentence reflects the severity of the crime and the need to prevent further harm to the community.
