RICHMOND, VA – Two members of the Almighty Black P. Stone gang received 38-year federal prison sentences today for the chilling kidnapping and murder of a 25-year-old woman in May 2023. Hezekiah Carney, 26, of Norfolk, Virginia, and Jayquan Jones, 22, of Richmond, Virginia, were convicted on federal charges related to the brutal slaying, bringing the total number of sentenced defendants in the case to four.
The victim, a mother of two, was targeted for a perceived infraction within the gang, according to court documents. On May 6, 2023, Carney, along with Jamica Langley, 25, of Richmond; Donnisha Goodman, 27, of Portsmouth, Virginia; and Acacia Jackson, 20, of New York, initially stormed her Richmond apartment, inflicting a beating. But they weren’t finished. Roughly an hour later, the group returned, this time with Jones, and forcibly abducted the woman.
The gang drove the victim approximately an hour east to a desolate area in York County, Virginia. There, Jones and Goodman subjected her to a horrific execution. She was shot at least eight times in the head, abdomen, back, buttocks, and legs, leaving her body abandoned in the remote location. The callousness of the act drew condemnation from federal officials. “Cold-blooded, senseless gang violence like this affects entire communities,” stated Supervisory Official Antoinette T. Bacon of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division.
Following the murder, Carney, identified as the leader of the group, allegedly ordered Goodman, Jackson, and Langley to destroy evidence – burning their clothing and maintaining strict silence about the crime. The investigation, a collaborative effort between the ATF, FBI, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia, quickly unraveled the conspiracy. U.S. Attorney Erik S. Siebert emphasized the importance of these partnerships in bringing the perpetrators to justice, calling the murder an example of “wanton violence” and “senseless brutality.”
“This sentencing marks another significant step towards justice for the victim, her family and the community,” said Special Agent in Charge Anthony Spotswood of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Washington Field Division. While no sentence can ever fully compensate for the loss, authorities hope the outcome provides a measure of closure. Assistant Director Chad Yarbrough of the FBI’s Criminal Investigative Division added that the sentencing should serve as a warning: “When gang members resort to kidnapping and murder, they leave behind shattered lives and communities in fear.”
The sentences handed down to Carney and Jones underscore the federal government’s commitment to dismantling violent gangs and holding those responsible for their crimes accountable. The ATF, FBI, and DOJ all released statements vowing to continue their collaborative efforts to protect communities from the scourge of organized crime. Langley, Goodman, and Jackson have also been sentenced for their roles in the kidnapping and murder, though details of their sentences were not immediately available.
