On August 1, 2024, at approximately 2:42 p.m., a driver was shot and injured on I-40 in North Carolina by John Franklin Barrow Jr., who was later found to be a previously convicted felon in possession of a firearm. The shooting occurred when Barrow, 43, shot into a semi-truck, causing it to crash into the tree line. The driver suffered life-threatening injuries but survived. Barrow is also linked to another shooting on I-40, where he shot towards a truck, damaging the vehicle but not injuring the driver.
Barrow’s criminal record dates back to 2002, with several felony convictions, including Felony Larceny of a Firearm, Felony Conspiracy to Sell Fentanyl, and Felony Attempted Breaking and Entering a Building. He was arrested at a motel in Winston-Salem, where he was found armed with a loaded firearm in his pants pocket. A search of his vehicle recovered approximately 9 cartridge casings and 26 live rounds.
Barrow pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm as a previously convicted felon and was sentenced to 15 years in prison, plus 3 years of post-release supervision, by Chief United States District Judge Catherine C. Eagles. The sentencing brings closure to the case, but the community is still reeling from the brazen highway shooting spree.
