Honduran Alien Sentenced for Illegal Reentry

A 34-year-old Honduran man has been sentenced to 82 months in federal prison for illegally reentering the United States, a crime that carries significant penalties, especially when committed by someone with a previous aggravated felony conviction.

Judge Jane Triche Milazzo handed down the sentence in federal court, also ordering Jose Transito Lopez to serve three years of supervised release following his imprisonment. If Lopez violates any terms of his supervised release, he risks an additional term of imprisonment.

According to court documents, Lopez pleaded guilty to a one-count indictment admitting he was an alien who was previously removed and was knowingly and unlawfully found in the United States, in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana on November 14, 2012, without the Attorney General or Secretary of Homeland Security, having expressly consented to his re-application for admission into the United States.

The case was investigated by the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement – Enforcement and Removal Operations and the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office. Robert Weir, a Special Assistant United States Attorney, prosecuted the case.

Lopez’s sentence was subject to enhancement based on a previous aggravated felony conviction, which significantly increased the penalties for his crime.

The case highlights the importance of immigration laws and the consequences of violating them. The U.S. Attorney’s Office and federal law enforcement agencies continue to work together to enforce these laws and protect the community.

Jose Transito Lopez, 34, a citizen of Honduras, was sentenced today in federal court by U.S. District Judge Jane Triche Milazzo to 82 months imprisonment, announced U.S. Attorney Dana Boente.
