Alexandria, VA – In a shocking turn of events, a federal jury has convicted Sergio Alberto-Rodriguez, a 38-year-old Honduran national, of illegally reentering the United States. This conviction comes on the heels of Alberto-Rodriguez’s guilty plea to aggravated sexual battery of a 10-year-old family member in Arlington County Circuit Court.
According to court records and evidence presented at trial, Alberto-Rodriguez was removed from the United States on November 5, 2008. However, he managed to sneak back into the country and was later arrested and charged with the aforementioned child abuse crime. Alberto-Rodriguez pled guilty to that charge on February 7 and was taken into federal custody on February 20.
The jury found Alberto-Rodriguez guilty of reentering the United States illegally, a charge that carries a maximum penalty of two years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and one year of supervised release. He will be sentenced on September 11. Additionally, Alberto-Rodriguez may face deportation or removal after serving his sentence.
This case is a stark reminder of the dangers of human trafficking and the exploitation of vulnerable individuals. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia, led by Jessica D. Aber, and the Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Washington, D.C., led by Liana Castano, worked tirelessly to bring Alberto-Rodriguez to justice.
The prosecution team, led by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Ariana Lazzaroni and Assistant U.S. Attorney Alessandra Serano, presented a compelling case that highlighted Alberto-Rodriguez’s egregious actions. Their dedication to seeking justice for the victim and their family is a testament to their commitment to upholding the law.
The investigation and prosecution of this case were a collaborative effort between the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the ERO. Their hard work and determination have ensured that Alberto-Rodriguez will face the consequences of his actions. As the case moves forward, the community can take comfort in knowing that those who commit such heinous crimes will be held accountable.
