NEW ORLEANS – In a shocking display of disregard for U.S. law, Honduran national, JAROL DAVID SOSA-PALMA, has been sentenced to six months in prison for Illegal Reentry into the United States.
According to court documents, SOSA-PALMA, 34, had previously been officially deported from the U.S. on June 21, 2013. However, on May 30, 2015, he was found back in the country, sparking a lengthy investigation by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency.
U.S. Attorney Kenneth A. Polite praised the work of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency in bringing SOSA-PALMA to justice. "The sentencing of Mr. SOSA-PALMA serves as a reminder of the consequences of violating U.S. immigration laws," said Polite.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Spiro G. Latsis was instrumental in securing SOSA-PALMA‘s conviction. "We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that those who disregard our nation’s laws are held accountable," said Latsis.
In addition to his prison sentence, SOSA-PALMA will be subject to one year of supervised release and a $100 special assessment. Following his incarceration, he will be surrendered to the custody of the U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement for removal proceedings.
The sentencing of SOSA-PALMA serves as a stark reminder of the importance of upholding U.S. immigration laws. As Polite noted, "The safety and security of our nation depend on our ability to enforce these laws and protect our borders."
The case against SOSA-PALMA is a prime example of the U.S. government’s commitment to combating Illegal Reentry. As the investigation and subsequent sentencing demonstrate, those who choose to disregard U.S. immigration laws will be held accountable for their actions.
