Fort Myers, Florida – A bold move by a Honduran national has landed him in federal prison for 30 months. Luis Alonso Contreras-Rivera (32), a citizen of Honduras, was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge Sheri Polster Chappell for illegal reentry after a felony conviction.
Contreras-Rivera’s return to the United States has been a recurring theme. Court documents reveal he was previously removed from the country on December 3, 2012, January 19, 2015, and November 2, 2018. Yet, on January 1, 2024, he surfaced in Charlotte County, where he was arrested for a state criminal offense.
This isn’t Contreras-Rivera’s first brush with the law regarding his illegal status. He had previously been convicted of illegal reentry into the United States on September 10, 2013, in the Western District of Texas. Notably, he never sought nor received permission from the Attorney General or the Secretary of Homeland Security to reenter the country.
The U.S. Border Patrol investigated the case, which was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Patrick Darcey.
Contreras-Rivera’s disregard for the law has earned him a significant sentence, but it’s a stark reminder of the consequences faced by those who defy immigration laws and reenter the country illegally after a felony conviction.
The sentence was handed down in a court that continues to crack down on illegal reentry and other immigration-related offenses, sending a clear message about the severity of such actions.
