Tracy Jones, a former Senior Vice President at the Atlanta Housing Authority, has been sentenced to prison for orchestrating a scheme to defraud the Section 8 housing assistance program and pandemic relief funds in Atlanta, GA. From April 2017 to the time of her guilty plea, Jones exploited her position to collect fraudulent payments for her own rental property and family members. She also made false applications to collect pandemic relief funds and committed mortgage fraud when refinancing her rental property.
Jones’ actions were a blatant abuse of trust, using her senior position to steal limited public funds meant for low-income families and individuals. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) funds Section 8 programs, and Jones’ scheme undermined the assistance intended for vulnerable communities and struggling businesses during the pandemic.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office and the HUD Office of Inspector General (OIG) worked together to investigate and prosecute Jones. U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg stated that Jones’ actions were a violation of the trust of the community, taxpayers, and needy families, and that her theft meant other members of the community went without much-needed relief.
Jones’ sentence serves as a warning to those who would exploit HUD-funded programs for personal gain. The HUD OIG will continue to work with the U.S. Attorney’s Office and law enforcement partners to aggressively pursue those who abuse their positions and pilfer from the treasury.
