A Chinese national, Wei Gong, also known as ‘David Gong’, has been arrested in China for his role in a massive drug importation scheme that brought hundreds of kilograms of controlled substances into the United States through the Port of Savannah, Georgia. The 45-year-old Tianjin resident was taken into custody by Chinese authorities in February 2026, following a joint investigation with US law enforcement. Gong’s operation allegedly involved importing more than 10 kilograms of dangerous drugs into the Southern District of Georgia, with plans to bring in over 1,000 kilograms more.
The US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Georgia has charged Gong with Conspiracy to Import Controlled Substances, Conspiracy to Distribute Controlled Substances, Importation of Controlled Substances, and Distribution of Controlled Substances. Each of these charges carries a statutory sentence of up to 20 years in federal prison, along with substantial financial penalties and a period of supervised release.
Gong’s chemical company in China was allegedly used to facilitate the importation of these drugs, which included deadly fentanyl analogues. The US is seeking forfeiture of cryptocurrency seized during the investigation, which was used to fund Gong’s operation.
The successful arrest and prosecution of Gong is a result of the collaborative efforts between US and Chinese authorities, who worked together to develop the case and bring the suspect to justice. The US Attorney’s Office has praised the Chinese Ministry of Public Security’s Narcotics Control Bureau for their professionalism and hard work in taking Gong into custody.
