Javon Opoku, Child Sexual Exploitation, Texas 2023

HOUSTON, TX – Javon Opoku, 20, of Houston, is facing decades in federal prison after appearing in court and being ordered detained on charges relating to the sexual exploitation of a child. The case, announced by U.S. Attorney Ryan Patrick, reveals a pattern of alleged criminal behavior and disregard for the law while already facing multiple charges.

A federal grand jury indicted Opoku on August 19, and he was taken into custody August 24. Today’s hearing before U.S. Magistrate Judge Andrew M. Edison painted a disturbing picture of Opoku’s alleged actions. The judge determined Opoku posed a significant danger to the community and ordered his detention pending further proceedings. The sheer audacity of this individual is staggering.

Court testimony revealed Opoku was already out on bond for a laundry list of offenses when he was initially pulled over for a traffic violation in February. He was on bond for charges including capital murder, evading arrest, and unlawful carrying of a weapon. During that stop, law enforcement seized his cellphone, leading to the current indictment. He was released again on bond, a decision that now appears deeply flawed. Testimony revealed Opoku was juggling eight different charges stemming from alleged activities on four separate dates.

The seized cellphone contained the damning evidence: three videos allegedly depicting Opoku vaginally penetrating a 16-year-old female. These videos are being classified as child pornography. The details presented in court are horrific and underscore the depravity of this crime. Opoku flagrantly violated the standard conditions of his previous bonds – conditions that include abstaining from new offenses, narcotics, and weapons possession – while free in the community.

If convicted, Opoku faces a minimum of 15 years and up to 30 years in federal prison, along with a potential $250,000 fine and the requirement to pay restitution. The investigation was a joint effort by the FBI and the Houston Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kimberly Ann Leo is prosecuting the case, which is part of Project Safe Childhood, a national initiative dedicated to combating child sexual exploitation.

Project Safe Childhood, launched in 2006, marshals federal, state, and local resources to identify, rescue, and prosecute those who prey on children. This case serves as a grim reminder of the ongoing fight against this horrific crime. It’s crucial to remember that an indictment is merely a formal accusation, and Opoku is presumed innocent until proven guilty through due process of law.
