HOUSTON – In a stunning admission of guilt, 26-year-old Khalia Douglas has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud, according to U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani.
This heartless scheme spanned from March 2020 until June 2021, where Douglas conspired with others to submit falsified applications to FEMA, the Small Business Administration (SBA), and a bank for financial assistance. Her Instagram account “GoGettaKaee” was used as a platform to advertise her fraudulent activities.
“SBA is back open. $350 for method. Yes im doing applications $100 upfront & $2k when your money hit. You’ll need a real bank account,” were the words that Douglas used to entice clients, who paid through CashApp and provided payment proofs.
The investigation into Douglas revealed not only her fraudulent applications for herself but also false Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) applications for another individual. She even submitted eight FEMA disaster assistance applications related to Hurricane Laura.
Her deceitful acts didn’t end there; she filed false unemployment benefits in Kansas, rented an apartment under someone else’s name, and deposited counterfeit checks using someone else’s bank account. Authorities found a trove of fraudulent documents on her phone and computer, including texts, emails, fake tax documents, and counterfeit government identification images.
The scheme netted Douglas approximately $23,775 while causing the EIDL, PPP, and the bank to lose a total of $351,007 with an attempted loss amount of $514,415. U.S. District Judge Alfred H. Bennett has set sentencing for Sept. 26, where she faces up to five years in federal prison and a possible $250,000 maximum fine.
Despite her confessed crimes, Douglas was permitted to remain on bond pending sentencing. The investigation was conducted by the Department of Homeland Security-Office of Inspector General, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Rodolfo Ramirez handling the prosecution.
