Damarcus Glenn, Gun Possession, Tennessee 2019

JACKSON, TN – Damarcus Glenn, 19, of Humboldt, Tennessee, is headed to federal prison after being sentenced to 46 months for illegally possessing a firearm. The sentence, handed down by U.S. District Court Judge S. Thomas Anderson on June 11, 2019, reflects a hard line against repeat offenders and gang activity, according to U.S. Attorney D. Michael Dunavant.

The case began on March 25, 2018, when Humboldt Police initiated a traffic stop on a Ford Mustang for speeding. Inside, officers found Glenn, Jordan Powell, 20, and two juveniles. A search revealed a .40 caliber Smith & Wesson pistol under Glenn’s seat and another .40 caliber Smith & Wesson under the seat of one of the juveniles. Powell also possessed a 9mm pistol in his waistband. The juvenile also had 21.4 grams of marijuana in his possession. While the juveniles and Powell were not convicted felons, Glenn was – and already facing additional charges.

Evidence revealed a calculated attempt by Glenn and Powell to manipulate the situation. Powell initially tried to claim ownership of both pistols, only able to account for the weapon on his person. Correctional officers later reported that Glenn and Powell actively attempted to convince one of the juveniles to take responsibility for the gun charge, a desperate move to shield Glenn from further legal consequences given his prior felony conviction. Both Glenn and Powell are identified as members of the 83rd Criminal Gang.

The investigation didn’t end with the traffic stop. On April 17, 2018, U.S. Marshals serving an arrest warrant for Glenn in Humboldt discovered a 9mm Springfield Armory pistol in plain view on a bed during a search of his apartment. The resident denied ownership. Crucially, investigators overheard Glenn attempting to persuade Powell, while in custody at the Humboldt Police Department, to take the blame for the gun found at the apartment. This damning evidence further solidified the case against Glenn.

“Now more than ever, it is crucial that we remove firearms from dangerous and prohibited people, and remove violent gang offenders with firearms from our communities,” stated U.S. Attorney Dunavant. “This conviction and sentence demonstrates our commitment to use all of the laws provided by Congress to target and incapacitate violent gang members with guns before they pull the trigger.” Beyond the federal sentence, Glenn also faces charges in Rutherford County for violation of probation and in Gibson County for attempted first-degree murder stemming from a 2015 shooting incident.

The investigation was a collaborative effort between the Humboldt Police Department, the 28th, 29th, and 30th Judicial District West Tennessee Violent Crimes and Drug Task Force, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorney Hillary Lawler Parham prosecuted the case on behalf of the government. Glenn will also serve 3 years of supervised release following his 46-month prison term.
