HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Federal judge Liles C. Burke delivered a severe blow to public corruption with the 18-month sentence handed down to Zachary Rashad Humphrey, 31, for stealing mail and improperly enriching himself.
From March 2022 to April 2022, the former U.S. Postal Service employee systematically pilfered checks from his delivery route, selling them on the dark web. The total value of the stolen checks exceeded $40,000.
“Public servants who abuse their positions of trust to enrich themselves face serious consequences,” said U.S. Attorney Prim F. Escalona. “I am grateful for the collaboration between federal law enforcement and the Huntsville Police Department in bringing this defendant to justice.”
Zachary Rashad Humphrey pleaded guilty to receipt of stolen mail matter and theft of mail by a postal employee in November 2022. The U.S. Secret Service, Postal Service Office of Inspector General, and Huntsville Police Department worked tirelessly to investigate and prosecute the case.
“The defendant took advantage of the public trust bestowed upon him as a U.S. Postal Service employee,” stated SAC Patrick M. Davis. “The U.S. Secret Service stands firm with our federal law enforcement partners in bringing justice to those who violate that trust.”
Acting Special Agent in Charge Jonathan Ulrich emphasized the integrity of most postal employees: “An employee who decides otherwise will be aggressively investigated. This case is a testament to the successful partnership between the U.S. Attorney’s Office and our agents.”
