Teaching Assistant Exposed: Former St. Louis University Employee Pleads Guilty to Blackmail

A shocking case of blackmail has unfolded in St. Louis, Missouri, as a former teaching assistant at St. Louis University has pleaded guilty to extorting a student who was his former girlfriend. Hussein Kadhim Abood Khalaf, 34, a resident of the United States on a student visa, was a teaching assistant in one of the victim’s classes in the fall of 2020.

According to court documents, Khalaf dated the victim briefly in December 2020, but his actions took a dark turn when he began using Instagram to threaten her. He created fake accounts and sent her threatening text messages from multiple phone numbers, demanding $30,000 and sex in exchange for not releasing nude pictures and videos of her to her friends, classmates, and relatives.

Khalaf, an Iraqi citizen, is currently facing deportation due to the severity of his crime. His plea agreement acknowledges that his actions may impact his immigration status, and he is planning on petitioning to be readmitted to the university after being expelled.

The case was investigated by the FBI, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Colleen Lang and Matthew Drake prosecuting the case. Khalaf pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor blackmail charge in front of U.S. District Judge Henry E. Autrey.
