McLaughlin Man Indicted For Assault
A federal grand jury has indicted Ryan Soft, a 22-year-old man from McLaughlin, South Dakota, for Assault with a Dangerous Weapon and Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury. The indictment was handed down on March 13, 2013, and Soft is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
According to the indictment, the maximum penalty upon conviction is up to 10 years’ in custody, a $250,000 fine, or both; 3 years of supervised release; and a $100 Special Assessment. Restitution may also be ordered.
The investigation into the assault is being conducted by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Standing Rock Agency. Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy Morley is prosecuting the case.
Soft appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge William D. Gerdes on April 4, 2013, and pled not guilty to the indictment. He was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal pending trial on June 11, 2013.
