Keethan Re’shaun Roland, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Iowa 2017

DAVENPORT, IA — A 24-year-old Iowa City resident is facing a heavy penalty for his brazen decision to flout the law with an illegal firearm. Keethan Re’shaun Roland was sentenced on April 10, 2017, by United States District Court Judge Rebecca Goodgame Ebinger to serve 51 months in federal prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm, announced United States Attorney Kevin E. VanderSchel.

The sentence also mandates three years of supervised release after Roland’s time behind bars is complete, and he must cough up $100 to the Crime Victims’ Fund as part of his penance.

On December 5, 2016, Roland pled guilty to selling a Remington .22 caliber rifle for $250. The sale was not just any transaction; it was a serious infraction because Roland had multiple felony convictions from Johnson County, Iowa, which made him legally prohibited from owning or possessing firearms.

This was no small-time crime: the investigation into Roland’s illegal activities was a joint effort between the Davenport Police Department and the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). It was clear that the justice system intended to send a strong message about the consequences of breaking federal firearms laws.

The case against Roland has been prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa, which demonstrates the commitment to ensuring that those who threaten public safety with illegal weapons face the full weight of the law.
