In a disturbing case of child exploitation, Israel Ramos Portillo, a 39-year-old Honduran man, has been found guilty of attempting to entice a minor to engage in unlawful sexual activity in Florida.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Florida, Portillo was arrested on April 12, 2025, after engaging in sexually explicit conversations with an undercover detective posing as a 14-year-old girl on a dating website.
Over the course of two weeks, Portillo expressed his interest in having sex with the child and arranged to travel from his home in Alabama to Tallahassee to meet her. However, instead of meeting the child, he was met by law enforcement who arrested him and seized his cell phone as evidence.
The investigation, which was a joint effort between the Leon County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations, revealed that Portillo had traveled across state lines with the intention of engaging in sexual conduct with the fictitious 14-year-old girl.
Portillo faces a minimum mandatory sentence of 10 years in federal prison and a maximum of life imprisonment, followed by a term of supervised release. He will also be required to register as a sex offender and will be held for deportation proceedings at the conclusion of serving his federal sentence.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Justin M. Keen and is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.
