TYLER, Texas – The grim saga of illegal firearm possession in Cherokee County reached a boiling point as Cody Nerren, a 34-year-old Jacksonville felon, was hit with a federal firearms violation charge, according to Acting U.S. Attorney Jay R. Combs.
The grand jury’s indictment this week paints a chilling picture of Nerren being caught with heat on April 24, 2025, in Cherokee County. The evidence suggests that the firearms were not just any weapons but part of a dark past marked by multiple felony convictions and an explicit ban on owning or possessing guns.
This latest incident is embedded within Operation Take Back America, a colossal Department of Justice initiative aimed at flushing out illegal immigration, dismantling cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and safeguarding communities from violent crime. The operation harnesses the might of OCDETFs and Project Safe Neighborhood to coordinate efforts across various law enforcement agencies.
Should Nerren’s fate meet its legal conclusion, he could find himself ensnared in up to 15 years behind bars. As it stands, the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Homeland Security are on the case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Jim Noble leading the prosecution.
The charges against Nerren serve as a stark reminder that a federal indictment is not a verdict but simply the starting point of what could be a harrowing journey through the court system. Remember, all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
