Jacksonville Tax Preparer Charged in False Tax Return Scandal
A Jacksonville tax preparer is facing serious charges after allegedly aiding in the filing of false tax returns, netting her clients thousands in refund amounts.
According to a recently unsealed indictment, Candia V. Williams, owner and operator of Express Tax Returns, now known as ‘Taxonville’, allegedly reported false information on her clients’ tax returns, including business income and eligibility for tax credits, in order to maximize refund amounts.
Williams, who faces nine counts of aiding in the preparation and filing of false tax returns, could face a maximum penalty of three years in federal prison on each count, if convicted.
An indictment is merely a formal charge that a defendant has committed one or more violations of federal criminal law, and every defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
The case was investigated by the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation and will be prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Michael J. Coolican.
Williams’ actions have left many questioning the integrity of the tax preparation industry, with some calling for stricter regulations to prevent similar schemes.
The full extent of Williams’ alleged wrongdoing is still unknown, but one thing is clear: the consequences of her actions could be severe.
