Jacob Daskal, Sexual Abuse of a Minor, New York 2023

Jacob Daskal, the former head of the NYPD’s Shomrim, a private Orthodox Jewish security group affiliated with the NYPD, has pleaded guilty to sexually abusing a 15-year-old girl. The crime took place in Brooklyn, New York, in August 2017, when Daskal, then 58 years old, began engaging in sexual activities with the girl, who was in his care.

According to court documents, the abuse occurred while the girl was staying with Daskal and his family in Brooklyn. Daskal would often transport the girl to and from his summer home in South Fallsburg, New York, driving through New Jersey. In the summer of 2017, the abuse took place primarily in Brooklyn, but also in Daskal’s summer home in South Fallsburg.

During the abuse, Daskal would often communicate with the girl via text messages and Skype video chats. On one occasion in August 2017, Daskal went to Chicago, where the girl was staying with another family, and checked into a hotel room with the girl for sex. He returned to New York the next day.

Daskal threatened the girl, warning her not to tell anyone about their sexual activities and promising to harm her family if she did. He also used his position as a leader in their community to intimidate the girl.

The abuse continued until the girl began attending school in Chicago in the fall of 2017. Daskal helped her find a new school and even traveled to Chicago to visit her. However, he continued to communicate with the girl through text messages and Skype video chats, warning her not to tell anyone about their relationship.

The government’s case was prosecuted by the Civil Rights Division. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Erin Reid and Jenny Nguyen are prosecuting the case with the help of litigation analyst Ryan Castelli.
