An Omaha man has been sentenced to prison for his role in a fentanyl trafficking conspiracy.
Ja’hvont Payne, 27, of Omaha, Nebraska, was sentenced to 60 months’ imprisonment by Chief United States District Judge Robert F. Rossiter, Jr. in federal court in Omaha.
The sentence was handed down after Payne was found guilty of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute ten grams or more of an analogue of fentanyl.
According to court documents, law enforcement executed a search warrant on an apartment at 25th and Cumming Streets in Omaha on March 1, 2020, after a female overdosed on fentanyl.
Payne was staying with co-defendant Robert Rush at the time of the search, and law enforcement located 1,029 pills in nine different bags in the bedroom where they were staying.
The pills tested positive for fentanyl, with a total weight of over 110 grams.
The female who overdosed died as a result of the fentanyl, and an autopsy confirmed the cause of death.
Payne will begin a four-year term of supervised release after his release from prison.
The case was investigated by the Omaha Police Department.
Robert Rush, the co-defendant, is currently scheduled for trial in March 2022.
The United States alleges that Rush sold the female the pill that caused her overdose.
