Utah Man Sentenced to 10 Years for Fentanyl Conspiracy in Nebraska

Celso Carillo, a 44-year-old man from Beryl, Utah, was sentenced to 121 months’ imprisonment for his role in a fentanyl trafficking operation in Nebraska.

US Attorney Susan Lehr announced the sentence in a press release, stating that Carillo conspired to distribute and possess with the intent to distribute 400 grams or more of fentanyl.

Carillo’s sentence was handed down by Senior US Judge John M. Gerrard in federal court in Lincoln, Nebraska. He will serve 10 years in prison, followed by a 5-year term of supervised release after his release.

The fentanyl trafficking operation was uncovered in January 2023, when a Nebraska State Patrol trooper stopped a car driven by Alfonso Carillo, Celso’s nephew, for license plate violations near North Platte, Nebraska. A search of the vehicle revealed three packages of fentanyl weighing a total of 6.6 pounds, as well as an additional package weighing 2.5 pounds, for a total of 9.1 pounds.

While incarcerated in Lincoln County, Carillo wrote two letters taking responsibility for the drugs. His nephew, Alfonso Carillo, pleaded guilty to a state felony charge of possession of meth in Lincoln County and was sentenced to 364 days in jail in June 2023.

Alfonso Carillo was federally indicted with Celso Carillo in August 2023, but his whereabouts are currently unknown. The case was investigated by the Nebraska State Patrol.
