A brazen late-night break-in at a downtown business in Timber Lake, South Dakota, has landed a local man in hot water. Jake Morrison, age 31, of Eagle Butte, South Dakota, was at the center of the investigation after a January 6, 2013, incident saw the business burglarized.
According to sources, the break-in occurred at a downtown business in Timber Lake, leaving authorities scrambling to track down the perpetrator. The investigation was led by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Division.
After a thorough investigation, Morrison was charged with third degree burglary, a serious offense that carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in custody, a $250,000 fine, or both; 3 years of supervised release; and a $100 assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Morrison, represented by Assistant US Attorney Mikal Hanson, appeared before US District Judge Roberto A. Lange on April 30, 2013, and pled guilty to the indictment. The guilty plea marked a significant milestone in the case, bringing closure to the business owner and the community at large.
The case is now awaiting sentencing, with a presentence investigation ordered and a sentencing date set for July 22, 2013. Morrison was remanded to the custody of the US Marshal’s Service pending sentencing.
