A shocking case of child exploitation has come to light in Lackawanna, New York, as 28-year-old James M. Meyers pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography.
The charge carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, a fine of $250,000 or both, as stipulated by the law.
According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Scott S. Allen, Jr., the case began on June 24, 2014, when the Wyoming County Sheriff’s Department responded to a complaint in the Town of Pike. Deputies were given an SD card which contained images of child pornography.
A subsequent investigation determined that the SD card belonged to Meyers, and a forensic analysis confirmed that the images were indeed child pornography. Some of the images contained graphic images of prepubescent children.
This case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.
The investigation was led by Special Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Wyoming County Sheriff’s Department, under the direction of Sheriff Gregory Rudolph.
Meyers’ plea is a significant step towards bringing justice to the victims of child exploitation. Sentencing is scheduled for May 13, 2015, at 1:00 p.m. before U.S. District Judge Richard J. Arcara.
