A Kanawha County man has been brought to justice after pleading guilty to distributing methamphetamine in the state. Jamie Edward Smith, 35, of Montgomery, pleaded guilty to the federal crime on February 22, 2022, and faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, a minimum of three years of supervised release, and up to a $1 million fine.
According to court documents and statements made in court, Smith sold approximately 18 grams of methamphetamine to a confidential informant on Third Avenue in Montgomery for $350. He admitted to selling additional quantities of methamphetamine totaling approximately 51 grams to the confidential informant in Montgomery on two other occasions in February 2022. Smith further admitted to possessing a pistol and showing it to the confidential informant during one of the transactions.
Smith is scheduled to be sentenced on January 18, 2023. United States Attorney Will Thompson made the announcement and commended the investigative work of the Metropolitan Drug Enforcement Network Team (MDENT).
The case against Smith was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Nowles Heinrich. Senior United States District Judge John T. Copenhaver Jr. presided over the hearing.
The investigation into Smith’s activities was led by the Metropolitan Drug Enforcement Network Team (MDENT), a multi-agency task force that targets and disrupts the flow of illicit narcotics in the region.
