New ORLEANS, LOUISIANA – The grimy streets of New Orleans have once again seen justice served as Jarrod Carter, 30, a repeat offender, was sentenced to 97 months imprisonment for being a felon in possession of firearms. This comes after Carter was caught with a loaded .40 caliber handgun and an AR-15 style rifle, both with obliterated serial numbers.
Carter’s sentence, handed down by U.S. District Judge Nannette Jolivette Brown on June 26, 2025, is part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative, which aims to reduce violent crime and gun violence in our communities.
The case began when the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) received a complaint about unidentified black males distributing narcotics and brandishing firearms on Mandeville Street. The Drug Enforcement Administration Task Force (TFO) and NOPD officers quickly traced the activity back to Carter, who is a previously convicted felon and prohibited from possessing firearms.
Following his release from prison, Carter will be placed on supervised release for three years and must pay a mandatory $200 special assessment fee. Assistant United States Attorney Tracey N. Knight, Chief of the Criminal Division, handled the prosecution of this case, which was investigated by both the DEA and NOPD.
Project Safe Neighborhoods is based on core principles that foster trust in our communities, support organizations to prevent violence, set focused enforcement priorities, and measure results. This program stands as a beacon of hope for making New Orleans safer for all residents.
The grim tally of Carter’s crime spree was not just the firearms; it also includes the lives put at risk by his illegal activities. The sentencing of Jarrod Carter is a stark reminder that the justice system will not tolerate felons who endanger our communities with their criminal acts.
