Jason Riley, Assault Resulting In Serious Bodily Injury, South Dakota 2013

A brutal assault has shaken the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation in South Dakota, leaving a victim with multiple injuries.

Jason Riley, 36, of Rosebud, South Dakota, was charged with Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, a crime that carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in custody and/or a $250,000 fine, 3 years of supervised release, and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

The assault occurred on October 13, 2010, at the Sicangu Village Housing on the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation.

According to the investigation, Riley was involved in a verbal disagreement with the victim, who asked for a cigarette. The dispute escalated, and Riley struck the victim in the face and kicked them with his shod feet while the victim was on the ground.

The victim suffered multiple abrasions, soft tissue bruising, and a nose bone fracture as a result of the assault.

The investigation was conducted by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services, and the case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Tim Maher.

Riley appeared before U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange on November 19, 2013, and pled guilty to the charges. A presentence investigation was ordered, and a sentencing date was set for February 10, 2014. Riley was released pending sentencing.
