Javarus Payne, 34, Sentenced to 37 Months in Prison for Felon in Possession of a Firearm and Ammunition

In a move to combat violent crime, Javarus Payne, 34, of Rochester, New York, has been sentenced to 37 months in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Payne was convicted in federal court in February 2012 of possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. At the time of his arrest on August 29, 2020, he was under the supervision of the United States Probation Department.

Payne’s arrest occurred during a traffic stop on East Main Street in Rochester. Officers from the Rochester Police Department and troopers from the New York State Police seized a loaded, black semiautomatic handgun that had been reported stolen in Pennsylvania.

The matter was brought by the United States Attorney’s Office as part of its Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative, aimed at reducing violent crime through a comprehensive approach.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Charles Moynihan handled the case, which involved a collaboration between the Rochester Police Department, the New York State Police, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
