On October 20, 2022, a federal jury found Jeffery David Sutton, 55, guilty of carrying, using, brandishing, and discharging a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence and assault with a dangerous weapon with intent to do bodily harm in Indian Country.
On December 20, 2021, Sutton got into an argument with his girlfriend, whom he told to move out of his house. The following day, she was waiting for a ride to pick her up, when Sutton changed his mind, returned home, and the parties argued in the front yard. Sutton then went to his truck, pulled a handgun and started shooting at his girlfriend.
He fired at least eight times toward her. Multiple bullets hit the doorway she was standing in, and one hit her in the chest. While Sutton was shooting at her, he stated he was going to kill her, as well as her family.
Tulsa County Sheriff’s personnel were the first to respond to the scene and found Sutton in the front lawn, with an empty firearm and he was taken into custody. Law enforcement personnel applied pressure to the victim’s wound. She was transported to the hospital, treated, and later released from the hospital.
Court records show that Sutton was the owner of a Bixby gun store and trained in handling firearms. On February 10, 2023, U.S. District Judge Gregory K. Frizzell sentenced Sutton to 157 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release. Judge Frizzell further ordered Sutton to pay $5,000 in restitution.
Sutton will remain in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility. The FBI, Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office and Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation conducted the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Steven J. Briden and Kristin F. Harrington prosecuted the case.
Jeffery David Sutton, the former owner of a Bixby gun store, will face 157 months behind bars for his violent crime against his girlfriend. The conviction of Sutton serves as a harsh reminder that those who abuse firearms will be held accountable for their actions.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of domestic violence and the importance of seeking help when faced with such situations. The Grimy Times urges anyone affected by domestic violence to seek help and support.
