Chicago Man Sentenced to 21 Months in Prison
In a move aimed at reducing violent crime, a Chicago man has been sentenced to 21 months in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm. Jeremiah Taylor, 29, was sentenced by United States District Court Judge James T. Moody after pleading guilty to the charges.
Taylor was found to have possessed a loaded firearm in March 2020, despite having prior felony convictions for aggravated battery on a peace officer and criminal damage to government property. These convictions make him a prohibited person under federal law from possessing firearms.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the Gary Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin F. Wolff prosecuted the case on behalf of the government.
The case was prosecuted as part of the joint federal, state, and local Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Program, a strategy aimed at reducing violent crime. PSN focuses enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partners with locally based prevention and reentry programs to achieve lasting reductions in crime.
Taylor will serve 21 months in prison followed by 2 years of supervised release. His prior felony convictions make him a repeat offender, and the court’s decision reflects the seriousness of his crime.
The sentencing highlights the importance of enforcing laws that prohibit felons from possessing firearms. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the Gary Police Department worked together to bring Taylor to justice.
