A 39-year-old Newport News man has been sentenced to 17 years and six months in prison for his involvement in a cocaine distribution ring.
Newport News resident Jermaine Damon Outlaw was found guilty of possession with intent to distribute cocaine and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.
According to court documents, law enforcement officials detained Outlaw on August 29, 2019, at a Best Western hotel in Newport News, Virginia. Outlaw was found in possession of 1.36 grams of cocaine, $855 in cash, and a loaded illegal handgun.
During the investigation, authorities discovered several text conversations on Outlaw’s cellphone that confirmed his involvement in regular cocaine distribution. Outlaw also had multiple outstanding felony warrants for his arrest at the time of his detention.
Outlaw’s lengthy rap sheet includes at least 20 previous convictions for various crimes, including assault and battery, possession of a firearm on school property, carrying a concealed weapon, and possession with intent to distribute cocaine.
Judge Rebecca Beach Smith handed down the 17-year and six-month sentence, which is a significant blow to Outlaw’s reputation as a notorious cocaine trafficker.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Peter G. Osyf prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Washington Field Division, and the Newport News Police Department.
Outlaw’s sentence is a testament to the dedication of law enforcement officials in Virginia and their commitment to combating the scourge of cocaine trafficking.
