Cherry Creek Man Sentenced for Voluntary Manslaughter
A Cherry Creek man has been sentenced to federal prison for his role in a deadly assault. Jerome White Horse, Jr., age 61, was convicted of Voluntary Manslaughter after a violent confrontation in February 2020.
On February 12, 2020, White Horse and another person assaulted a man who crashed his vehicle during a medical emergency in Cherry Creek, South Dakota. According to authorities, White Horse used a garden hoe to strike the victim in the head, resulting in fatal injuries.
White Horse was indicted by a federal grand jury on March 11, 2020, and pleaded guilty to the charges on March 1, 2021. On May 17, 2021, Chief Judge Roberto A. Lange, U.S. District Court, sentenced White Horse to 63 months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release, and a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $100.
The investigation into the crime was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services. Assistant U.S. Attorney Cameron J. Cook prosecuted the case.
White Horse was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service. The sentence brings an end to a lengthy and dramatic case that shocked the community in Cherry Creek.
