Yankton Man Sentenced for Being a Felon in Possession of a Firearm
United States Attorney Ron Parsons announced that Jesse Ray Rains, a 40-year-old man from Yankton, South Dakota, was sentenced to 12 months and a day in federal prison for Felon in Possession of a Firearm.
Rains was convicted of the crime after he was found to be in possession of several firearms, including a DPMS, Model A-15, 5.56 NATO caliber rifle; a Sturm, Ruger & Company Inc., Model American Rimfire, 17 HMR caliber rifle; a Sturm, Ruger & Company Inc., Model 10/22., .22 caliber rifle; and a Smith & Wesson, Model SD40VE., .40 caliber pistol.
The discovery of the firearms was made during a lawful search of Rains’ home on October 17, 2018, by law enforcement. At the time, Rains was prohibited from possessing firearms due to a previous conviction of a crime punishable by imprisonment exceeding one year.
Rains was indicted by a federal grand jury on January 8, 2019, and pled guilty on August 26, 2020. He was sentenced on November 16, 2020, by U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier.
Rains was also ordered to pay a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $100 and will serve 3 years of supervised release following his prison sentence.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and making neighborhoods safer for everyone. The case is also part of Project Guardian, the Department of Justice’s initiative to reduce gun violence and enforce federal firearms laws.
