Washington D.C. Hate Crimes Investigation Exposed
WASHINGTON D.C. – The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia has been accused of failing to prosecute potential hate crimes, but U.S. Attorney Jessie K. Liu says the office is working hard to keep the community safe.
In a statement regarding the D.C. Council hearing, Liu said that prosecuting bias-related crimes is critical to keeping the community safe. ‘When one member of a group is the victim of a bias-related crime, all members carry with them a fear that they, too, may be targeted because of who they are,’ she said.
The office has been working with law enforcement to investigate and prosecute potential hate crimes. According to Liu, the office brings criminal charges in the vast majority of cases presented to them by law enforcement as potential hate crimes. In 2018, 59 out of 204 potentially bias-related incidents flagged by the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) resulted in arrests presented to the office for prosecution.
Liu also highlighted the office’s engagement with the community on this issue, including hosting quarterly meetings of the Hate-Bias Task Force. The office has made several changes to its procedures for reviewing potential hate crimes, including appointing an additional hate-crimes coordinator to review potential hate crimes and assist in their investigation and prosecution.
The office has also been working to address concerns from the community, including feedback on its procedures for reviewing potential hate crimes. Liu said that the office is eager to work with the community to seek justice in potential hate crimes and to enhance public safety.
The D.C. Council hearing was entitled ‘Hate Crimes in the District of Columbia and the Failure to Prosecute by the Office of the United States Attorney.’ However, Liu said that the office will not testify in person at the hearing, as its title shows that the committee has reached a conclusion before a full and fair consideration of the facts.
Liu said that the office’s dedicated career prosecutors carefully review every arrest identified as a potential hate crime and make principled charging decisions based solely on the law and the facts. The office remains committed to working with the community to seek justice in potential hate crimes and to enhance public safety.
