BUCKHANNON, WV – Johnna Dee Courtney, 39, of Buckhannon, West Virginia, is staring down a potential lifetime behind bars after admitting to a double-dip in criminal activity: peddling methamphetamine and passing counterfeit cash. The case, cracked by the Mountain Lakes Drug & Violent Crimes Task Force alongside the U.S. Secret Service, reveals a network of illicit dealings in the Mountain State.
Courtney pled guilty to one count of “Possession with Intent to Distribute 50 grams or more of Methamphetamine” and one count of “Possession of Counterfeit Obligations.” According to court documents, Courtney wasn’t just holding onto the “ice” – the street name for crystal meth – she was actively pushing it onto the streets of Upshur County back in May 2019. Fifty grams is no small amount; it’s a significant quantity indicating a substantial operation.
But the drugs weren’t her only hustle. Authorities also found Courtney in possession of 95 counterfeit $100 bills – totaling $9,500 in fake currency. The Secret Service takes counterfeiting seriously, as it undermines the integrity of the nation’s financial system. Mixing fake bills with legitimate tender introduces chaos and erodes public trust.
U.S. Attorney Bill Powell’s office is prosecuting the case, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Brandon S. Flower will be arguing for a harsh sentence. Courtney is looking at a minimum of five years and a maximum of 40 years incarceration, plus a potential $5,000,000 fine for the drug charge alone. The counterfeit charge carries its own hefty penalty: up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
The final sentence will be determined by U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael John Aloi, taking into account the severity of the crimes and Courtney’s criminal history – if any. Federal Sentencing Guidelines are complex, but the sheer volume of methamphetamine and the presence of counterfeit currency strongly suggest a significant prison term is likely. This case underscores the persistent drug problem and financial fraud plaguing West Virginia.
The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case as it progresses through the federal court system. The investigation, a joint effort between local and federal agencies, serves as a reminder that even in remote areas, criminal activity will be pursued and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Courtney’s next court date has not yet been announced.
