Muskogee man pleads guilty to Attempted Arson in Indian Country, faces life in prison and $250,000 fine
A 48-year-old Muskogee resident has admitted to a federal crime that could put him behind bars for the rest of his life. Johnny Lee Vann pleaded guilty to Attempted Arson in Indian Country, a charge that carries a maximum penalty of up to life in prison and a $250,000 fine.
According to court documents, Vann was charged with maliciously attempting to set fire to a dwelling on January 4, 2025. The crime occurred in Muskogee County, within the boundaries of the Muscogee (Creek) Reservation, in the Eastern District of Oklahoma.
The investigation into Vann’s alleged crime was a joint effort between the Muskogee County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Kevin Gross and Dak T. Cohen represented the United States in the case.
Vann will remain in the custody of the United States Marshals Service pending sentencing. A U.S. District Court Judge will determine the sentence to be imposed after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
The Honorable Jason A. Robertson, U.S. Magistrate Judge in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma, accepted the plea and ordered the completion of a presentence investigation report.
Vann’s guilty plea is a significant development in the case, and it remains to be seen what sentence he will ultimately receive. For now, the 48-year-old Muskogee man will remain behind bars as he waits for his fate to be decided.
